A Red State “Spartacus”
by James Finn Garner. Copyright 2007.
The army of slaves, now prisoners of war, sit on the hill awaiting their fate. The Roman soldiers tell them they can avoid the agony of crucifixion if they hand over the slave called Spartacus.
Hidden in the crowd, Spartacus stares ahead. He knows that revealing his role in the slave rebellion will mean slow, agonizing death, but the alternative will cause innocent men to die. He steels himself to live by his conscience, and rises to declare his identity.
Before he can open his mouth, the slave next to him stands and announces in a clear voice, “HE is Spartacus!”
Another stands to add, “And we’ve intercepted the phone calls to prove it!”
